As an on-location photographer, I always have my eyes peeled for new and interesting locales for a photo shoot. And a few schools have made me want to return for a session. No, not just the well-known beauty and architecture of Stanford University. But local elementary schools. What better place to find elements of childhood throughout the halls and playgrounds than a school where children spend much of their days?

I love these boys. I’ve photographed them several times since they were babies. I think they’re rather used to me by now. No time needed to warm up for a session. In fact, I believe they had a lot of fun showing off their school playground. This is why I’ve always wanted to do a session at an elementary school. There’s something unique about each of them that speaks of the student life that fills the hallways. At this one, it’s the mural. And the ball wall. And the play structure.

I love what the site has to offer – an old wagon, graffitti’ed wall, white birch trees, stone wall facades – so many possibilities, so many great spots – and an historical landmark to boot! Since I’d photographed this family before, they were looking for a new and different locale, too. Serendipity?

After such a fabulous session, see how it all came together below. This mom had a few ideas for spaces to show off her portraits and settled on the living room. Talk about a head turner. Here, everyone who visits gets to enjoy the image gallery. It’s a strong focal point and the portrait display beautifully plays off the colors in the room. Just gorgeous. [The two portraits on each side measure 20" x 20" while the two horizontal ones are 10" x 20". Each portrait is on a canvas gallery wrap, 1 1/2" deep, black edges.]

The other day, I wanted to show a new client some ideas for photo session sites in the local area. The Rose Garden was one of them. But when I looked at past blog posts, they were nowhere to be found. And this was one session I really wanted to share…so many personal faves.

Around October, Autumn colors begin to dominate the area. The changing of the season from Summer to Fall usually means that flowers, particularly roses, have passed their blooming stage and withered away, anticipating the beginning of a new cycle. This is often a worry when it comes to photos but luckily…we live in California. The municipal Rose Garden in San Jose still blooms, though not as much as in the Spring. October in the Rose garden still offers vibrant colors, gorgeous backdrops and an endless number of picture-perfect spots. Add a wonderful close-knit family with a daughter bubbling with the non-stop energy typical of an 8-year-old and a son with tweendom attitude, embarrassed by the slightest public display of affection and you have the makings of a particularly fun and sweet session.

It’s been quiet around here for a while. I know, I know. The unfortunate truth is that I’m not the most prolific writer. And while this blog is mostly about showing off the wondrous images of the many fabulous families I had the honor to hang out with, I still feel the need to write a little something. And therein lay the problem. Words don’t come easy to me. While I’m always happy with the end result, it still takes me a while to finish a short paragraph. Ugh. But I still keep trying…particularly since it’s time to make a long overdue announcement – my new and improved Solheim Photography web site is now up and running!

As the saying goes, “It’s been a long time coming.” hahaha The new site is not a blogsite (a combined web site and blog), as has become popular with many photographers. I still kinda like having a web site home and separate blog because well…see above. But I digress.

The greatest thing about the site is now, you can access it from your iPad, iPhone, Android, and the like! Flash is no longer required to access my site – just choose the link for non-flash mobile devices on the Splash Page.

Here are a few more great things about my site:

My NEW Solheim Photography logo is all over it – so happy and fun…just like me. :-)

Images are BIG just like in my old site. The bigger the better, I always say…when it comes to photos, of course.

I wrote more stuff. Stuff that I hope gives you a good idea about what to expect from working with me before, during and after your session, ideas on what to wear, and most important, why choose Solheim Photography and other things to consider when selecting a professional photographer to capture images you’ll cherish about your family.

Updated photo galleries with new faves from recent sessions.

Easier to see and navigate clients’ galleries – of course, you have to be a client with photos to review from a recent session to see this one, but trust me. It’s much nicer. ;-)

So, when you get a chance, stop by and take a look around. Hope you love it just as much as I do.

And because I just can’t write a post without a photo, here are my girls hangin’ around the neighborhood park.

More to come…stay tuned.

Happy Leap Year Day! It may be cliche. But what the heck. I just can’t help myself.

A heartfelt Happy Valentines Day to you! While I have several sessions queued up to share with you, first I must acknowledge this annual celebration of love. For the last few years, the days leading up to Valentines Day have been intensely busy with cookie baking/frosting/packaging and card signing. You can probably imagine who took on most of that labor. This year, however, was different. My almost 8-year-old girls insisted on taking over most of the cookie prepping and packaging *and* had specific ideas about this year’s Valentines Day card they would share with classmates and teachers. They loved the “mini me” design I did for them last year and wanted to do a similar thing. They both had several concepts they wanted to try. So, this last weekend, we had a mini photo session in my home studio. And since they couldn’t decide which card to choose, they went with all of them. Check ‘em out and Happy Valentines Day!

I was sitting here wondering about what I could possibly follow up the many Christmas in Norway posts I put up over the last couple of weeks. Yea, I’m behind on posting recent photo sessions, especially after the rush of the holiday season. But I’m still in the I-want-to-write-about-something-different mode. Then it quickly came to me…Christmas presents! Well, one Christmas gift that I knooooooooow that I and many other female photographers have been drooling over. A new camera bag! No, not just any camera bag. We’re talkin’ red hot, leather-lookin’, sassy, no-guy-would-ever-use-it kinda camera bag. It’s got attitude. It’s got style. And it says woman all over it. That’s my Lola bag by Epiphanie and I LOVE it!

Camera bags in general are somewhat non-distinct. Dark colored. Functional and boring. Some call them man bags. But over the last few years or so, some female photographers took action. They probably figured that as long as we’re in this industry and as long as we’re always carting around our cameras, we may as well have a bag that has some personality. Style. Color. Something like a purse or handbag. But roomy and pretty. To be honest, I’ve never been the kind of person that changed purses very often or had a purse to match every outfit or occasion. No, I’ve always been practical about my purses. I needed one for everyday work. And one for dressy evening occasions. But when I retired from the corporate hi-tech world, my needs changed and I usually carry around a black boring fanny pack and (you guessed it) my camera bag. I began to miss having a nice leather bag to carry my stuff. I missed the elegance and soft velvety leather I found in the classic Coach handbags. And I began to <del>want</del> need a camera bag that matched me.

But as I searched for camera bags, I realized that like purses, I needed different ones for different reasons. Mainly because of size but also because of the different occasions I use my camera. And after a few years of collecting, I believe I finally have a complete line of camera bags that match me in color, style and function and for different occasions such as portrait sessions, school activities and travel. With my new Epiphanie bag, my collection is now complete and each has a specific purpose for which I use it.

Jill-e camera bag is my storage bag. It holds all of my camera gear. It rolls around and saves my back. It is made of red leather. If you didn’t know what was in it, you wouldn’t guess it was a camera bag at all…just a nice red leather travel bag on wheels. It usually stays in my car at a shoot. I just like to have all of my stuff with me when I go on location. Not real practical for on-the-shoot use, though.

Shootsac lens bag is my workhorse during shoots. This is the bag I wear on-the-shoot that carries my extra lenses, car keys, iPhone, CF cards, etc. It’s lightweight and hugs my lenses tightly so that I never worry they’ll fall out. I also have a couple of different covers – one is a solid bright red and the other is a colorful floral one.

Glee bag from The Joy Bag collection. My other workhorse camera bag on-the-shoot. When I decide to carry two cameras where one is loaded with my 70 mm – 200 mm lens, this is it. With my camera and zoom lens in here, I don’t worry that I’m going to bump my camera into something while I’m shooting with the other.

IT bag by The Joy Bag collection. This is a camera bag insert that you could put in any tote bag. It makes any tote bag a camera bag with its cushiony sides and velcro inserts. This is the ultimate in flexibility! I have a black tote bag I put this in and use it when I want to bring several non-camera-gear type things in a single bag with my camera. It holds a bit more than my new Epiphanie bag. It just suffers from lack of style and color. Otherwise, it’s quite useful.

Lola bag by Epiphanie. This brings me to my newest and sweetest acquisition. One look at it and you just know what I mean by personality. This is the smallest of my camera bags and I anticipate using this one practically everyday. It’s large enough to carry my camera loaded with a 50mm lens and my 24-70mm zoom lens along with a few lens cleaning supplies and extra CF cards. It also carries my wallet and an assortment of other necessities (e.g., checkbook, chapstick, pens, iPhone, Digital Elph point-n-shoot camera, business cards, reading glasses). Another nice thing about this bag besides the many pockets? The interior is in lavender (rather than black), so it’s easy to find things.

Yea, yea, I know. Most people ask a professional photographer, what’s in your camera bag, hoping to glean a bit of information about what gear that photographer finds most useful and necessary for her work. But as I mentioned earlier, I’m still in the writing-about-something-different mode and decided to answer the what is your camera bag question. And honestly, it’s a question I’ve been getting just as often. Hope this helps!

More to come…stay tuned.

It’s hard to believe but the holidays are over and 2012 has begun. Just the other day, I was scheduling a playdate for my daughters and we had to push it to February! Because so many activities and special events in January, that was the first time our calendars coincided for a few hours. Scary to think that January will be gone that fast…and it’s only the 5th day of the month!

We did have a wondrous break in Norway with family and friends. Though we won’t see them again until the summer (physically that is, we do have Skype), the photos (of course, the photos!) will help us hold onto the fun times we shared. And with that, a few last photos from our New Year’s Eve celebrations. Enjoy!

Game time is a favorite way to pass the hours until midnight, particularly for the kids.

Fireworks everywhere! My in-laws live on a hill, so, we were able to enjoy fireworks shows all around us. The kids were fascinated by their own sparklers. And my husband set the long exposure on his camera and painted the night sky with a sparkler as he captured some of the fireworks exploding around us. (And if you’re curious, I took the people shots with my 50mm 1.2L at 1.6, 1/100 and ISO 6400 on my 5D MkII, no flash.)

It began to snow during the fireworks and those snowflakes are the big hexagon shapes on the images. Unfortunately, that snow also lightened the sky, making it difficult to capture many fantastic fireworks shots. But my husband managed to capture a few in the distance.

The morning after, we were greeted by a blanket of white snow. Just a spectacular sight, especially after the snow had melted away the previous two days.

And of course, the flag was raised to mark this important annual event. Oh and by the way, the presence of the snowplow incites just as much excitement in our girls as the trucks on recycling day at home.

I love Christmas! It’s always been my (and my husband’s) favorite holiday of the year. There’s just something about this magical season. Shopping for Christmas-themed things be they ornaments or hangings or anything, really, is one of my favorite things to do. Unfortunately, I don’t have endless wall or display space. And Christmas trees have only so many branches before you can’t see the tree for the ornaments. So rather than continually buying new items, I photograph them. I do this at friends’ and relatives’ decorated homes as well – who don’t question my actions knowing I’m a photographer and I have my quirks. hahaha Anyway, since we were in Norway for the holidays, I had several occasions to photograph new and different holiday decor.

My new obsession this year is what I call the button-nose nissen with lots of hair and a long cap. The round table of little red-scarved women eating porridge depicts a favorite tradition on julaften (Christmas Eve), particularly for children. And instead of a gingerbread house, one of the cousins decided to build a gingerbread Hogwarts train:Christmas goats of straw are frequent visitors during Christmas…
Red crocheted hearts, heart-shaped woven bag ornaments, wooden angels and nissen of tree branches…

Another thing I love about Norwegian traditions? Many families keep their Christmas decor up through the twelve days of Christmas, typically around the 5th of January. And it’s one we’ve decided to maintain.

More to come…stay tuned.
