There’s an extra special place in my heart for moms. Yea, a lot of it does have to do with my being a mom myself – no better time to be me than any other time in my life. But I also have a mother for whom I hold the deepest respect and unconditional love. The joys and challenges of motherhood are unique and unparalleled and it’s a silent bond I’ve shared with my own mother since I was pregnant with my twin girls over six years ago. One of my favorite quotes, “Making the decision to have a child – It’s momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body,” by Elizabeth Stone, sums it up for me so accurately, especially now that my girls are in Kindergarten.
It was a while before I became a mom. And when I did, I was so moved by the deep emotions I felt for the tiny lives I held in my hands – a feeling I’m certain many mothers share – I wrote a short poem and stuck it in my scrapbooks. And today, I thought I would share it with you.
Before I Became Your Mother
I never knew…how happy I would feel when you smile,
I never knew…how sad I would feel when you cry,
I never knew…how heartwarming it would be to watch you grow,
I never knew…how much love my heart could hold,
And now…I will always know.
